Hotel Stays Worth Skipping the Destination For

Sometimes, a hotel is simply part of the travel equation, a comfortable place to sleep between days spent exploring. But for those of us who occasionally plan a trip with the hotel first and the destination second, it’s a different story.

Give us a ridiculously comfortable room, five-star facilities and enough activities to keep us happily occupied without ever leaving the property, and we’re sold. From doing absolutely nothing in a plush robe to filling the day with everything the hotel has to offer, these activity-packed stays on our radar might just convince you to skip the destination altogether.

There’s no shortage of things to see in Kos, but Ikos Aria makes a pretty convincing case for staying put. The all-inclusive resort packs in eight restaurants and nine bars, plus pools, a beach and enough activities to make leaving feel almost unnecessary.

Paddle out on the water, play tennis or beach volleyball, join yoga and fitness classes, borrow a bike or simply disappear into the spa. Younger guests have plenty going on too with the Heroes Kids Club for ages 4 to 12 and Just4Teens for those 12 and up. Even evenings are taken care of with live music, shows and parties. And should you finally decide to venture beyond the resort, a complimentary day with an electric MINI Countryman, Culture Pass and Dine Out experience make exploring Kos part of the stay too.

JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa

There are countless hotel stays that linger in our minds long after checkout, but JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa somehow swam, ate and lounged its way straight into our top ten. Set along the beach in Khao Lak, Phang Nga, the resort is enormous in the best possible way. You could easily spend a few days here without feeling much urge to go anywhere else. There is a 2.4-kilometre lagoon pool winding through the property, watersports by the beach, an Aqua Play Zone, a long list of restaurants and bars and, importantly, the kind of breakfast that makes getting out of bed feel worthwhile.

What makes the stay especially fun, though, is how much there is to do beyond the usual pool-and-spa routine. You can wander through the JW Garden where all sorts of fruits, herbs and edible plants are grown, head out onto the water, or join experiences that take you into the surrounding landscape, including mangrove planting and bathing water buffaloes. Not exactly the sort of thing you expect to casually squeeze in between breakfast and cocktails.

That variety is really what stayed with us. One minute you are floating through the lagoon, the next you are paddling out on the Andaman Sea, poking around the garden, bathing a buffalo or figuring out which restaurant to try next. By the time evening rolls around, leaving the resort starts to feel less like a plan and more like pointless effort.

Sandals Grande St. Lucian

There are resorts that make a good base for exploring an island, and then there is Sandals Grande St. Lucian, which makes leaving feel almost unneeded. Set on a peninsula in Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia, the resort has water on either side with the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean sharing the scenery. Then come the views, with the island’s volcanic landscape in the distance and a long beach right outside.

The bigger problem might be figuring out how to fit everything in. There are twelve restaurants and seven bars, including a swim-up bar, so breakfast can roll into lunch, lunch into cocktails and cocktails into dinner without ever requiring much of a plan. Food, drinks and snacks are included too, which makes wandering from pizza to sushi to Caribbean jerk and then somehow ending up at a creperie feel entirely justified. And when you finally decide to move, there are many activities waiting outside the restaurant. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, Hobie Cats, water skiing and wakeboarding are all part of the line-up, alongside scuba diving for certified divers. Back on land, there are five pools, three whirlpools, tennis, a fitness centre and entertainment carrying on from day into night. Golfers can also head to the nearby Cap Estate Golf & Country Club where green fees and the shuttle are included.

As if that were not enough, guests also get access to two other nearby Sandals resorts in Saint Lucia through the brand’s “Stay at 1, Play at 3” programme, opening up even more restaurants, pools and beaches. At that point, leaving the Sandals bubble starts to feel like something you would have to actively make time for. Come for Saint Lucia, by all means. Just do not be surprised if your grand island itinerary quietly turns into swimming, eating, paddling, napping and ordering another drink by the pool.

Club Med Punta Cana

At Club Med Punta Cana, leaving the resort can quickly feel almost beside the point. Set along a palm-lined beach in the Dominican Republic, the all-inclusive escape spreads across 100 acres and comes packed with more than 25 sports and activities, from sailing, tennis and yoga to archery and the slightly more adventurous flying trapeze at its Circus School.

Families are especially well looked after with dedicated kids’ programmes keeping younger guests busy while parents steal a little time for themselves. Adults looking for even more peace can retreat to the Zen Oasis, a quieter, adults-only corner of the resort designed for slower afternoons by the pool and beach.
Then there are the restaurants, bars, and wellness offerings. One day might be spent bouncing between the sea, lunch, a tennis lesson and a nap. The next could involve yoga, trapeze, cocktails and absolutely no reason to check what is happening beyond the resort gates.
