There’s always more to a restaurant than what arrives on the plate. Of course, the food matters, but so do the cadence and chemistry between the kitchen and dining room, the warmth of the people welcoming you in and tending to your table, and the aura created by a setting that stays long after the meal ends. The best restaurants understand that dining is not built on one element alone, but on how every detail comes together to make you feel something.

It’s rare to find a place that delivers on all fronts with such effortless sophistication, but Jean-Pierre did exactly that. From the moment the appetizers arrived to the final dessert placed on the table, every part of the experience felt thoughtful, genuine, and full of character. It’s easy to see why this new Hong Kong hotspot has quickly earned a top spot on our list of favorite restaurants.

A little fun fact about this gem, its entire spirit was inspired by the Parisian bistros of Les Trente Glorieuses, France’s vibrant postwar era when long lunches, flowing wine, and lively dinner tables found its place at the heart of everyday living. Jean-Pierre captures that joyful energy beautifully, bringing back a time when dining out was less about rushing through a meal and more about celebrating life around the table.

Under the direction of MICHELIN-starred chef Matthew Kirkley alongside Chef de Cuisine John Troupis, Jean-Pierre brings classic French bistro fare to the table with a spirit rooted in sharing. Think comforting French staples designed for passing plates around, leisurely catch-ups, and stealing bites from one another when nobody’s looking.

To kick things off, we dove into the expertly seasoned Steak Tartare, Escargots de Bourgogne swimming in a vivid herb-packed butter, and Oeuf Mimosa, France’s answer to deviled eggs, elevated with creamy mayo, crispy bacon bits, and fresh chives. Familiar, indulgent, and comforting.

The drinks at Jean-Pierre carry the same spirited flair as the dining room itself. Behind the wine program, sommeliers Jean-Baptiste Copot and Nicolas Eyquem have assembled a distinctly French collection that travels from crisp, easy pours to celebratory bottles worth lingering over.

Meanwhile, Suraj Gurung’s cocktail menu leans playful and personality-driven, reworking familiar classics with unexpected twists. Naturally, we had to try the signature Cornichon Martini, a zippy mix of cornichon-infused gin, Baldoria Bianco, and just enough pickle brine to keep things sharp, savoury, and dangerously easy to sip. And because no good bar escapes our personal martini test, we also ordered the Dirty Martini. Jean-Pierre passed with flying colours.

Just as we settled comfortably into a parade of starters and martinis, the mains arrived to become the stars of the table. The Saumon au Beurre Blanc was an instant favourite, featuring Big Glory Bay King Salmon cooked with a perfectly crisp exterior while staying buttery and tender at its core. Beneath it sat a silky Muscadet beurre blanc scattered with fresh chives that added just the right delicate onion note to every bite.

Then came the Steak au Poivre where the Stanbroke tenderloin was served deeply caramelised on the outside and perfectly blushing within, finished with all the richness and peppery indulgence you’d hope for from a classic French steak dish. Dessert was equally memorable, especially the Profiteroles au Chocolat, generously drenched in a glossy 70% dark chocolate sauce. Luscious and classy.

The setting alone deserves its own standing ovation because Jean-Pierre knows exactly how to set a mood. The red-and-white colour palette gives the space a bold yet romantic mood while candlelit tables and plush booths create the feeling of an evening already in full swing. Melissa Collison designed the interiors with a sense of lived-in elegance that feels unforced, pairing classic French touches with an intimate atmosphere. Add lovely servers in striking red suits and black bow ties, and the whole experience feels fabulously theatrical in all the right ways.

The evening drew to a close with complimentary shots shared across the bar, the kind of spontaneous closing gesture that somehow made the whole night feel even more special. We left Jean-Pierre not just full, but genuinely reminded of how powerful a great restaurant experience can be when every detail clicks into place. It sets a dangerously high benchmark, one that few places will easily reach, but somehow Jean-Pierre makes you believe that dining can still surprise and move you.
